I learned the story about Mama Woo's Korean Barbecue by reading http://www.nonstophonolulu.com/blogs/thedailydish/fuud-mama-woos-bar-b-q-in-moiliili/.  As I drove by this new location over the past several weeks, I watched the location, across the Union 76 Gas Station on King Street, turn into Mama Woo's.  I didn't make it in there until tonight, but reading the NonstopHonolulu.com blog about it a couple of weeks ago definitely put it on my list of places to try.

I had one of the specials of the day, the kim chee stew.  Kelli had the meat jun and fried mandoo combo.

We enjoyed all the flavors of the food food.  They offer a choice of white or brown rice and four "vegetable" choices.  I liked all the "vegetable" choices we selected except the tofu, it was a but dry.

It is nice to have another great Korean barbecue take out restaurant in the area.  I am sure that we will be eating there often.

Re-bedding worms & harvesting vermicast is getting to be a big job!

During the tour at Lanakila Pacific yesterday (http://nakama-m-photos.blogspot.com/2010/09/mixituphi-lanakilapacific-yesterday.html), we were shown the future site of their raised bed gardens that were under construction.  They are also planning to use food waste from their cafeteria by having worm bin composting to add to their sustainability.  Seeing that made me realize my worm bin was due for re-bedding.

The volume of my worms has increased quite a bit since I started the bin (http://nakama-m-photos.blogspot.com/2009/04/compost-worm-bin.html) and they are producing vermicast rather quickly now.  I think it is time for me to get one of those stacking worm composting set ups.  My back can't handle the hours it takes bent over separating the vermicast from the worms.

Here's a non-eventful video of the worms in their new bedding.

I am wondering which set up to get.  Or, should I make my own?  They are rather over priced.

#MixitupHI @LanakilaPacific yesterday

Yesterday, I visited and got a tour of Lanakila Pacific with the @MixitupHI show (http://www.hawaiiIRL.com/blog/2010/09/12/mix-it-up-hawaii-live-from-lanakila-pacific-meals-on-wheels-lanakilapacific-on-friday-091710-at-1130am-hst/).  It was a fun one because it was interactive.  We learned one of the jobs that volunteers do for Meals on Wheels.  We put on glamorous hair restraints and latex gloves as we packaged items into plastic bags in preparation for delivery.  You can probably find some of those wonderful photos and the taped version of the event here http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23mixituphi

After the volunteer work, we had lunch from the cafeteria.  It was a vegetarian chili and eggplant parmesan for lunch followed by manju and scones for dessert.  Everything was delicious!

It is quite an impressive facility and the cafeteria is also open to the public for lunch and catering.

Here are a few photos from there.

Thanks to @MIXITUPHI and @LanakilaPacific for hosting the lunch yesterday.  It was fun!

During the tour of the garden, I had a feeling like I needed to harvest some vermicast and re-bed my worm bin.  That will be my next post.

My @Clear 4G Speedtests seems to have (temporarily) improved. (@MyMobileHI)

After my last bunch of speedtests (http://ricknakama.posterous.com/httptwitpiccom2jrs5k-inside-glazers-coffee-ne), @Clear has been asking me to try some tests at home without the router.  I ran some tests.  These tests were performed on a Tuesday morning around 9am at home.  My average download results at home over wifi have been in the 2MB range.  Upload has varied all over the place from .0xxMB to the .9MBs.  I wish upload speeds were more consistently in the near 1MB area.

Since @Clear asked me over Twitter to do some tests without my router, I did some.  At first, you will see that I was amazed at the speedtest.net results!  I thought my router was the culprit.  See the "no router" results below on 2 servers with all signal strength LEDs lit on Clear Modem near window.

Crazy Fast Download!!  Is this real??

DreamHost

Immediately after seeing those results, I thought I better follow up with some traditional WiFi tests since that is how I have normally been performing my tests.  As it shows below, even the WiFi results showed much faster results than what I normally used to see.  This gave me the impression that Clear may have "fixed" or adjusted something to improve the performance of their 4G network.

Later in the evening, I wanted to check if the speeds were still "good".  I did a couple and was disappointed to see results near 1.0MB Download and .2MB Upload using the Nexus One on WiFi.  I didn't save those results out of frustration.  I held off posting these somewhat impressive results because I was unable to recreate them.  Perhaps 9am on Tuesday had very low usage in my area resulting in good speeds.  I don't know how much that affects the results, but until I recreate results like these, I will have to say this is not typical of my 4G experience at home.

Someone from Clear also asked me if I was "happy" with the service.  My answer - I appreciate the convenience it has offered me during the past months that I have had the mobile 4G service available.  My only complaint is the speeds do not live up to claims even if signal strength is excellent.  I especially wish the upload performance would be improved.  I've been accessing the web via mobile for several years now.  The reliability is definitely better with Clear's 4G service.  I am happy, but not super dooper impressed.  If the speeds improve and maintain consistency (in strong coverage areas), I will be happier!  =)
